During the military expeditions which were organized by Orhan Gazi to conquer Rumelia , with forty soldiers, his brother Süleyman Pasha went ahead Domuzhisar which was belonged to Byzantines. They conquered this place with incursion. After the conquring the other fortresses, forty advance guards returned and stopped over Samona which is in Greece now.

Forty warriors started to wrestle there. It was seen that during the wrestlings lasting for many hours, two borthers whose names has been told to be Ali and Selim weren’t able to beat each other in any way. Later ,in a Hıdrellez day the same couple started to wrestle again on the Ahıköy meadow near Edirne. Although they wrestled a whole day, they could not beat each other again and these two brothers continued to their struggle all night by the candle and lantern light. But they died where they were of being short of breath. Their friends buried them under a fig tree in the same place and then they left. They saw a rich spring at the place where to wrestlers graves were when they went to the same place after years. Then the public gives the name of ‘Kırkpınar’ to that region in the memory of the people buried there. The original Kırkpınar field is the place in the meadow of Samana village in Greece. Kırkpınar wrestling was organized at the place called ‘Virantekke’ which is between Edirne and Mustafa Pasha Roads at the end of the Balkan Wars and WWI. After the Republic, wrestlings start to be performed in Sarayiçi in Edine İn 1924. Kırkpınar wrestling was organized by aghas of it until 1928. They paid all prices of the wrestlings and hosting the guests. But when there was no demand for being aghas because of economical troubles in the country in 1928. the red Crescent and society for the protection of children take over the duty of wrestling organization and hosting the guests. In 1946 Edirne Municipality started to organized Kırkpınar wretlings. In this year the major Tahsin Şıpka included Kırkpınar wrestling in municipality services.
