Hıdırlık Bastion Balkan History Museum
Hıdırlık Bastion, where an epic resistance against the Bulgarians was shown under the command of Şükrü Pasha, has headquarters buildings, 18 artillery rooms, a 120-metre tunnel and 4 cellar rooms. The fact that the enemy armies coming from the Balkans reached the capital Istanbul without encountering any serious resistance prompted the Ottoman administration to establish a defence line in Edirne. Upon this, 24 bastions were built in the city, the largest of which is Hıdırlık.
Hıdırlık Bastion was built between 1886-1888 and used as the headquarters of the famous Edirne defence during the Balkan Wars. The bastion, which is considered as the symbol of the Edirne Defence in the 1912-1913 Balkan Wars, which started restoration works in 2011 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Balkan Wars, opened its doors to visitors as the "Edirne Balkan History Museum" on 31.12.2021.
In the "Balkan History Museum", which tells the 600-year history of the Turks in the Balkans from the conquest of Edirne in 1361, which took place with the transition of the Turks to Rumelia, until the Balkan War in 1913, and covers an area of 60 acres with a perimeter length of approximately 1800 metres, a total of 44 rooms, including 22 headquarters rooms, 4 dehliz rooms and 18 artillery rooms, were arranged within the scope of exhibition-disposition works.
Within the scope of the exhibition-disposition works at Hıdırlık Bastion, materials reflecting the findings uncovered during the restoration of the immovable and the active period of the bastion, firearms such as cannons, rifles and pistols reflecting the Balkan Wars Period and the Early Republican Period, cannonballs, all kinds of war equipment and military clothing reflecting the period were used.
The museum serves under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
